  Professional Program Requirements

 Completion of at least 45 credits, 15 of which have been earned at CCSU for secondary and all-level programs
 Passing scores for Praxis I (PPST) or official SAT waiver
 A minimum of 2.70 cumulative GPA at CCSU and a minimum 2.70 cumulative GPA for all college work taken at CCSU and elsewhere
 Acceptable writing skills assessed through an essay that demonstrates a command of the English language
 Acceptable oral communication skills assessed through an interview with department faculty
 Satisfactory completion of prerequisite courses and additional departmental requirements as follows:

Art Education

• Completion of ART 112, ART 113, ART 120 and PSY 235 OR PSY 236.
• Art Department portfolio review
• A minimum GPA of 3.00 in the content area

Biology – Secondary Education

• An original laboratory report written solely by the student, which demonstrates his/her ability to design, conduct, and report a scientific investigation and apply mathematics in analyzing and presenting data

Chemistry – Secondary Education

• An original laboratory report written solely by the student, which demonstrates his/her ability to design, conduct, and report a scientific investigation and apply mathematics in analyzing and presenting data

Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education

• Completion of the following courses with a grade C or better
• PSY 236 ENG 110 MATH 113
• HIST 261 or 262 EDTE 210 EDT 210
• For Early Childhood Education: PSY 462
• For Elementary Education one of the following: PSY 362, 363, 365, or 462
• 30 hours of quality experience with children or young adults. This experience may be paid or volunteer. Acceptable experiences include such things as childcare teacher or assistant teacher, camp counselor, paraprofessional, classroom volunteer, work in an after-school program, or work in a Scout or YMCA program. Baby-sitting or parenting experience is not acceptable. A Statement of Experience with Children form documenting the experience must be submitted with the application
• A resume that outlines your educational and work experiences.
• A recommendation from a faculty member in the your subject matter major department

 English – Secondary Education

• Completion of LING 200, ENG 205, 206, 210, 211, 220, and 449
• A minimum GPA of 3.00 in the content area

History – Secondary Education
 

History and Social Studies—Secondary Education

 Undergraduate & Graduate

·Minimum 3.00 GPA in the content area (calculated on all courses with the ANTH, ECON, GEOG, HIST, SOC, PS prefix or equivalent transfer courses).

·One of the two letters of recommendation must be from a CCSU fulltime History faculty member.

·Students must have a grade of “B” or better in HIST 301 or HIST 310 or a History Department approved equivalent Before Applying to the Professional Program.

Graduate Students additional

·Post-baccalaureate students only may request a waiver to be enrolled in History 301 or 310 at time of application. Department approval of wavier should be indicated below. The course must be completed before admission will be granted.

·Post-baccalaureate students only, passing score on the History/Social Studies Praxis II test (test code # 10081).

Integrated Science – Secondary Education

• An original laboratory report written solely by the student, which demonstrates his/her ability to design, conduct, and report a scientific investigation and apply mathematics in analyzing and presenting data

Mathematics – Secondary Education

• A minimum GPA of 2.70 in the Mathematics courses required by the major, with no more than two repeats
• Completion of MATH 221 Calculus II
• A letter of recommendation from a member of the CCSU Mathematics Department
• A second essay. See Math Essay form.

Music Education

• Pass at least 60% of piano proficiency exam
• Completion of MUS 101, 114, 121, 122, 221, 222, 278

Physical Education

• 15 semester hours completed at CCSU
• 5 semester hours of PE lecture courses including PE 213 Anatomy in Physical Education
• 3 semester hours of PE skill courses
• A minimum GPA of 3.00 in the major

Physics – Secondary Education

• An original laboratory report written solely by the student, which demonstrates his/her ability to design, conduct, and report a scientific investigation and apply mathematics in analyzing and presenting data

Social Science – Secondary Education

• A minimum GPA of 3.00 in the content area
• Completion of HIST 301 or HIST 310 with a grade of “B” or better
• A writing sample that is at least 15 pages in length, or a series of papers that are at least 5 to 10 pages in length. These writing samples must have grades and written comments from a former professor. Students should plan on using their final paper from HIST 301 or 310, or provide a portfolio of the various written assignments from one of these courses.
• A letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the CCSU History Department.
