Tests

The Praxis I tests are basic skills tests in reading, writing, and mathematics. The tests can be taken one, two, or all three at a time. Praxis I may be taken as many times as necessary to achieve passing scores. You may take a Praxis I test once per calendar month up to 6 times in a 12-month period. An official score report for all three tests is mailed to the student within six weeks. Students have two options for taking the PPST: The pencil and paper tests or the computerized tests.

 Pencil and paper tests

 The Reading and Mathematics tests are one-hour multiple-choice tests. The Writing test includes both a 30-minute multiple-choice and a 30-minute essay section.

 This form of the PPST is offered six times a year at sites throughout Connecticut. Students must pre-register for this test online at the ETS Website (http://www.ets.org) or by mail using the Praxis Series Registration Bulletin

 The Registration Bulletin is available outside Barnard 248.

Fees:

 $25 each test

 $35 registration fee per test date (nonrefundable)

Computerized tests

 These tests contain computer-delivered questions that require selecting single responses, highlighting or providing a constructed response. Each testing session is two hours to allow sufficient time for tutorials on computer use, the test itself, and the collection of background information for score reporting.
 This form of the PPST is offered at three sites in Connecticut. Appointments can be made by calling the test site directly

 Glastonbury 860-633-7236
 Hamden 203-287-9677
 Norwalk 203-847-0031

Or by calling Prometric Candidate Services at 800-853-6773
 Students may use a credit card and register over the phone or over the Internet: http://www.ets.org, or pay by check using a voucher request form. People with learning and/or physical disabilities, as well as, individuals for whom English is a second language, should read and follow the directions in the Praxis Registration Bulletin for special testing arrangements.

Test Preparation

For test descriptions, sample questions with answers, and test-taking strategies, check out the Test Preparation section on the ETS website (http://www.ets.org/praxis/prxorder) We recommend one of two ways to prepare for the tests. Students can purchase the Learning Plus workbooks published by Educational Testing Service available at the University Bookstore and the Other Bookstore.

CCSU students may also take advantage of a computer-based learning and skills instructional version of Learning Plus as described below. This method is most efficient because it targets specific areas of weakness through the diagnostic segment, while still familiarizing students with the entire test.

What is Learning Plus?

Learning Plus is a computer-based learning and skills instruction program created by Educational Testing Service. It is designed to help students who want to improve their skills in reading, writing and mathematics.

Learning Plus provides an initial skills assessment that identifies areas that need some polishing before you take the Praxis I. Learning Plus offers instructional lessons in reading, writing and mathematics and provides students with practice exams. It is an excellent way for students who don’t know what to expect, to prepare for the Praxis I. It is also a good tool for students who have failed parts of the Praxis I, as it pinpoints specific skill deficits and provides specific instruction to overcome them.

How Do I Register?

Students need to contact The Learning Center at 832-1900 (located in Room 241 Copernicus). An orientation session is required to teach students how to use the Learning Plus software. Once comfortable with the software, students work independently. The results of the skills assessments determine the amount of time recommended for adequate skill development and test preparation. Students must allow adequate time for computer instruction before they take the Praxis I for this to be beneficial. Typically, students who begin working with Learning Plus at least one month prior to taking Praxis find the program effective.

What Will I Get Out of It?

Students walk away from Learning Plus software with a greater awareness of their strengths and weaknesses in the content areas covered on the Praxis I. They are able to build their skills in areas identified as weak. Students are able to take practice tests that familiarize them with a format very similar to the actual Praxis I. Students may see an increase in their scores after completing their commitment with the Learning Plus software. Students who have used Learning Plus in the past have reported a greater level of confidence going into the Praxis I, in both their content knowledge, and their familiarity with the use of a personal computer.
