Program

The Social Work Program at Central Connecticut State University has been taught by a dedicated and experienced faculty since 1978. The program is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council on Social Work Education. The Social Work major consists of 39 Social Work credits and 12 credits from related areas. The purpose of this program is to prepare students for beginning social work practice or acceptance into graduate school.

A new, alternative program has recently been created for full-time employees of social service agencies who have already earned a minimum of 30 college credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Classes will meet on Saturdays and some will involve online learning opportunities.  Interested applicants who wish to begin study in fall 2008 must apply to the university before August 1, 2008. Application Process

All students interested in social work need to be Pre-Social Work majors first. To become a Pre-Social Work major, an appointment must be made with Dr. Catherine Baratta, the department chair (tele: 860-832-3016, e-mail: Barattac@ccsu.edu) or other available social work faculty (tele: 860-832-3129). Students must then apply and be accepted to the Social Work Major by the end of their sophomore year, or during their second social work course. Applications for Social Work will be taken March 1, and October 1, and are available in the Social Work Student Handbook or in the Social Work Program Office (Vance Academic Center, room 3240500).

Academic Requirements of the Social Work Program

In accordance with university policy, a student must have an overall GPA of 2.0 and have a minimum of "C" in all courses required for the major. In addition, students admitted to the Social Work major MUST maintain an average of 2.5 or better in all Social Work courses.

Field Component

The field component of the Social Work major is one of the strengths of the program. Students who enter the Program in their sophomore year will graduate with about 680 hours of agency practice. It is the feeling of the Program faculty that this breadth of field experience is to the students' advantage. The Program utilizes a concurrent model of field education that affords students opportunity to simultaneously practice in the field the theory that is learned in the classroom. The region surrounding CCSU possesses a rich array of human service agencies and provides a wide range of opportunities for students and enjoys strong support from the professional community.
