Susan Seider is Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Teacher Education at Central Connecticut State University. She serves as Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program and Coordinator for the Professional Development School (PDS) Network. In these positions, she is responsible for overseeing elementary professional program admission applications; and various assessments on the undergraduate and graduate levels; and directing the PDS network. She was the CCSU Teaching Excellence Awardee for 1996-97 and is a founding member and a steering committee member for the Center for Teaching Excellence and Leadership Development.
Dr. Seider has continuously contributed to reform efforts in teacher preparation and national accreditation. Before coming to CCSU, she taught middle school as well as elementary education courses and directed the Student Teaching Office at Juniata College in Pennsylvania. She also taught at The Pennsylvania State University while working on her doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on language arts/literacy with a minor in speech communication.
Her professional interests lie in course design, development, and assessment with emphasis on action research protocols, as well as in growing mutually beneficial ties between universities and public schools. Dr. Seider co-authored two chapters in a book titled Faculty Development: Vision to Implementation, Themes and Issues in Faculty Development: Case Studies of Innovative Practices in Teacher Education. Her latest professional work is a co-authored manuscript for an international journal on the effects of action research on teachers’ professional efficacy and inquiry mindsets. Dr. Seider also directed two research studies on student achievement and teacher quality funded by the NEA PDS Project Grant (2003-04 Phase 2). Before becoming chairperson she taught undergraduate courses in methods and assessment and graduate courses in recent trends in curriculum, and conducting action research projects as part of the masters’ capstone requirement. She currently teaches the master’s capstone courses.
