Biographical Sketch

Dr. Ellen Retelle was appointed to the Educational Leadership Department as an assistant professor in September 2007. Prior to coming to CCSU, she was an assistant professor at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta Canada. Dr. Retelle completed her Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada; Masters Degree in Educational Administration at the University of Houston, and undergraduate degree in teaching at Salem State College, Salem, MA. Prior to obtaining her Ph.D., Dr. Retelle was an elementary school principal at an international school for five years and an elementary school teacher for 11 years. She has taught and worked effectively and successfully in diverse, multicultural schools in the United States, Antigua, Taiwan, Japan, and Canada. She has taught adults and children from distinct socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. The school settings include public and independent, urban inner-city and suburban, under privileged and affluent, neighbourhood and international schools.


Research Interests


Dr. Retelle’s research interests are social justice, advocacy and school leadership, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT), preparation and promotion of school leaders, micropolitics and schooling. Research projects have included “Preparation and Promotion of Elementary Vice-Principalship to the Principalship”, and “Understanding and Learning about Leadership from a Queer Perspective”, and “Educating Student Teachers about the Beliefs and Practices of Social Justice”.
