Master's Program in School Counseling

School Counseling – 48-51 credit program that prepares students for professional careers as counselors in elementary, middle, and senior high schools. The program meets the certification requirements of the Connecticut State Department of Education. A strong emphasis is placed on a developmental model of school counseling that is reflected in the National Standards for School Counseling of the American School Counseling Association and Connecticut Best Practices in School Counseling. Students must be prepared to commit to both a 100 hour practicum and a full time internship.

Field Based Training

The Supervised Counseling Practicum (CNSL 503) is a one-semester, 100 hour placement, usually in an urban school setting during the students' second year. Practicum students participate in a variety of counseling experiences and become acquainted with the activities of a school counseling office. Students are provided with close supervision that includes review of video and audio taped counseling sessions.

The Internship (CNSL 591) for non-teachers is a 10 month (900 hours), full time intensive field placement following the practicum experience and completion of all required coursework. For certified teachers with at least 3 years of experience, 600 hours over the course of one or two semesters will satisfy the internship requirement. Students enrolled in the internship also attend a weekly seminar course.
