Undergraduate Programs

Nursing Program

The nursing program was established in 1981 and accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN) in 1986 and 1994. The program was accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) in 2001, which is a branch of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

The nursing program has a reputation for preparing graduates with exceptional theoretical, clinical, and evidence-based practice skills to work in a variety of settings.  There are a number of nursing scholarships available and the prospective student may check with specific professional organizations or the school of nursing.

The nursing department offers a baccalaureate program to Registered Nurses (RN to BSN); the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) designed to prepare a liberally educated person to function as a professional nurse in varied roles and health care settings. The program requires 125 credits. Upon completion of this program, graduates are expected to be professionally competent generalists in nursing, recognize the need for continued personal and professional development throughout life and possess the educational background for post-baccalaureate study in nursing.

Social Work Program

The Social Work Program at Central Connecticut State University offers a Bachelor of Arts and has been taught by a dedicated and experienced faculty since 1978. The program is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council on Social Work Education.  The Social Work major consists of 39 Social Work credits and 12 credits from related areas. The purpose of this program is to prepare students for beginning social work practice or acceptance into graduate school.

Athletic Training

The Athletic Training program is a Bachelor of Science, non-teacher certifiable program, which prepares students for employment as athletic trainers in sports medicine clinics, schools and colleges, and professional sports. Students are given the necessary cognitive and practical experiences for certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Board of Certification.

Exercise Science & Health Promotion

The Exercise Science and Health Promotion program is a Bachelor of Science, non-teacher certifiable program, which prepares students for employment in fitness/wellness centers at worksite (business and industry) medical (hospitals, clinics and HMOs) and strength and conditioning settings. Students are given the necessary cognitive and practical experiences for certification by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Students are responsible for assessing, interpreting, prescribing and designing health and physical activity programs.

Teacher Education Programs

The School of Education and Professional Studies offers a variety of programs that lead to teaching certification in the state of Connecticut.  The aim of programs in the School is to prepare individuals who are both liberally educated and in command of the requisite professional knowledge to be able to provide exemplary practice in their chosen field.  Programs and curricula draw their content from theoretical foundations in the arts and sciences, as well as from the world of professional practice.

The following programs lead to a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and prepare a student for teacher certification in the state of Connecticut.

Elementary Education (grades Kindergarten – 6)

The Elementary Education program prepares teachers to teach in an elementary school, grades Kindergarten through 6.

Students must choose either a single subject matter major (33 – 39 credits) or a dual subject matter major (42 – 43 credits)

The secondary education programs prepare teachers to teach specific subjects in grades 7 through 12.

Students must choose a major corresponding to the certification endorsement sought.

The all – level subject programs prepare teachers to teach Art, Music, Physical Education, and Technology Education at the elementary and secondary level.

Students must choose a major corresponding to the certification endorsement sought.
