Timeline & Deadlines

The application deadlines to the Professional Program are:

Fall Semester:       September 10th

Spring Semester:    February 10th

or the next regular day of classes if the date falls on a weekend or holiday

 

Completing the Professional Program in a reasonable amount of time requires careful planning, a good deal of organization, observation of important deadlines, recognition of professional program course pre-requisites and an awareness of what needs to be done when.

 

Elementary Education Professional Program

Courses in the elementary program are scheduled into four clusters or semesters, each designed with a shared field experience.  Part-time students may need to separate the courses in a cluster.  If this is necessary, please discuss it with your advisor.

 

SEMESTER 1

v  Take General Education and/or Major/Content courses as needed

v  Begin Professional Program Cluster I

Ø  RDG 315:      Comprehensive Reading Instruction I

Ø  SPED 315:    Introduction to Educating Learners with Exceptionalities

Ø  EDTE 315:     Principles of Learning

 

SEMESTER 2

v  Take General Education and/or Major/Content courses as needed

v  Begin Professional Program Cluster II

Ø  EDEL 322:     Effective Elementary Teaching

Ø  EDTE 320:     Practicum in Elementary Education I

*     Students must register for the same section with the same professor for EDEL 322 and EDTE 320

Ø  RDG 316:      Comprehensive Reading Instruction II

Ø  Undergraduate students only: Apply for degree audit & graduation

Ø  Undergraduate students only: Complete CAPP audit (Address any discrepancies with academic advisor or Registrar’s Office)

Ø  Graduate Student Only: Verify planned program with advisor or Graduate Studies

Ø  Plan to complete all coursework, including Professional, Major/Content, and General Education courses prior to Student Teaching.

 

SEMESTER 3

v  Attend a Student Teaching Application Seminar during the first month of classes

v  Apply for Student Teaching by March 1 or October 1 (visit the Office of Field Experiences in HB 334 to make an appointment)

v  Begin Professional Program Cluster III

Ø  EDEL 415:     Elementary Social Studies Methods

Ø  EDTE: 420     Practicum in Elementary Education II

Ø  FA 412:          Fine Arts Across the Curriculum

Ø  MATH 412:    Elementary and Middle Level Mathematical Models

Ø  RDG 412:      Literacy in the Elementary School

Ø  SCI 412:         Learning and Curriculum Studies in Science

v  Register with Career Services

Ø  Attend workshops to improve career skills (resume writing, interviewing, etc)

Ø  Take appropriate PRAXIS II test (s)

 

SEMESTER 4

v  Student teach (Professional Program Cluster IV)

Ø  EDEL 430:     Elementary Education Student Teaching

Ø  EDTE 430:     Seminar in Leadership and Learning Communities

v  Apply for State of Connecticut Certification (Room HB 203)

v  Attend career fairs

 

Secondary Education Professional Program

SEMESTER 1

v  Begin Professional Program Sequence I

Ø  EDTE 316:     Principles of Learning

v  Take General Education, Major/Content, and/or other Professional Program courses as needed

 

SEMESTER 2

            v  Begin Professional Program Sequence II

Ø  EDSC 425:    Principles of Secondary Education

Ø  Major Department methods course for secondary school teaching

Ø  RDG 440:      Literacy in the Secondary School

v  Take General Education, Major/Content, and/or other Professional Program courses as needed

v  Undergraduate students only: Apply for degree audit & graduation (Office of the Registrar)

v  Undergraduate students only: Complete CAPP audit

Ø  Address any discrepancies with academic advisor or Registrar’s Office

Ø  Plan to complete all coursework, including Professional, Major and General Education courses prior to Student Teaching

Ø  Graduate Students only: Verify planned program with advisor

Ø  Attend a Student Teaching Application Seminar during the first month of classes

Ø  Take the appropriate praxis II or ACTFL tests

v  Attend career fairs

 

All-Level Education Professional Program

SEMESTER 1
